Simple Steps To Your Happiness

Just three weeks to go until the wedding, she thought. She stared at herself in the mirror, incredulous at how she had changed over the years. How being a business woman, as well as parent and housewife had changed her body. Not as youthful as she used to be. Tired, overweight and a convenience food cook. How, she mused, was she going to follow through on her promise to her daughter to make the wedding cake? How was she going to look to her daughter’s friends and in-laws looking like this. Something had to change. Something right now.

Carol rose early, determined that today she would take small steps to help her get to her goal. Even before she stepped on the scale, she braced herself, knowing that the package of chocolate brownies she ate last night probably did not help the numbers go down on the scale. She wanted to lose weight fast, but more than that, she wanted to lose weight for good. One step was all she needed to take to start the process. And then another and another and yet another to keep the momentum going.

It was just one step, done often, and she would see the benefits of working out and controlling her eating habits. She spent more than an hour at the gym, lifting weights and doing cardiovascular exercises. When she was done, she hit the showers, anxious to rid herself of the sticky sweat all over her skin.

She hit the showers, and looking in the mirror, remembered that she needed to make a change so that she could see her self differently. She did not hesitate when the opportunity came up to take part in a grooming workshop. When she was done, she looked at her reflection and smiled. Here was the woman that she remembered – here was the woman that shone with confidence, beauty and style. She felt good about herself.

Years of convenience cooking, driven by her career and time constraints had taken its toll. She felt self conscious looking at the baking supplies that she had amassed for her cake decorating classes. It had been so long since she had baked treats for her daughter’s kindergarten class, she felt fear that she would let her daughter down on her important day.

By the end of the class, she felt much more confident. She looked at her creation and remarked to herself how beautiful it was that it looked good enough to eat. She was about to take one of the delightful treats and nibble on it, but then remembered.

She thought of her steps. How one step had led to another and was bringing her back again. Instead of nibbling on the cupcake, she placed it back in its box. The family will love this, she thought to herself as she nibbled on a carrot stick.
